Engineer killed after roof he was called to inspect collapsed

An engineer has died on the premises of a Morrisons warehouse after being hired to inspect a roof.  The man was killed when the roof he was inspecting collapsed on him. He was seriously injured after the incident and pronounced dead shortly after.

A spokesperson for Morrisons said:

“There was a tragic accident today at our Wakefield site.  A team of engineers was called to investigate a roof which subsequently collapsed causing the death of one of the engineers. This is a terrible and shocking tragedy and our thoughts are with his family. Police and other investigating authorities are on site now."

Mark Lynam, Wakefield Council’s corporate director for economic growth and regeneration, said:

"We are aware that the incident has resulted in a fatality and our sincere sympathies go out to the person’s loved ones. Council officers are currently on site, supporting the emergency response.“

The Health and Safety Executive has also been made aware of the incident and "is available to support if called upon to do so".

Police are also working with the HSE following the incident, treating it as an industrial accident.

The HSE helps businesses deal with industrial accidents and incidents if they take place, and provides important information to help employers undertake risk assessments and accident investigations.
